Full movie description "Dragon Ball Z Mini Gokû wa obotchama! Boku Gohan desu.":Start of the "Saiya-jin Saga". It has been five years since the defeat of Piccolo Daimao, and Goku and Chichi have settled down at Goku's old home in Mt. Paozu. They now have a son named Gohan, named after Goku's grandfather. One day Goku is supposed to meet his old friends for a reunion at Kame House house, but before he leaves he must find Gohan, who is lost in the forest. Meanwhile, a mysterious Saiya-jin warrior lands on Earth and searches for someone named Kakarotto. Instead, he finds Piccolo, who is still training to defeat Goku.
Reviews of the Dragon Ball Z Mini Gokû wa obotchama! Boku Gohan desu.Honestly I have seen the original Dragon Ball cartoon (or at least the first episode) and I found a lot of problems with it. I decided to let that slip and see what's in the newer and much more liked Dragon Ball Z. I am going to say while this doesn't really fix up some of the problems with the old show it manages to fix up some areas enough so I can actually say that while it isn't really for me this time I can actually kind of see the appeal behind it being a cultural phenomenon.
The plot is that 5 years have passed since the original cartoon (and one of the problems is that if you haven't seen the original you will be left in the dust, although I'm not going to entirely blame this show for that) and while Goku must find his son Gohan (who's an annoying version of Goku in the original show, they're even voiced by the same actress) and the reason why he is lost is because Goku abandoned him. So he goes looking for his son.
Actually, that part of the plot I found boring to tell you the truth, I mean it just shows off that cloud Goku flies. What actually drew me in was the "alien crash landing plot". A farmer finds a crashed um... space pod. and it turns out that the alien inside is looking for another one named Kakerok or something and he even challenges the villain of the first show to a fight and the villain of the first show loses. I'm going to say that on it's own it builds up to "you want to see more? heh-heh, watch the entire show!" and I'm going to say, this is what it does right beyond anything in the original cartoon.
So the complaints. I would be completely fine with the show if it was in a fantasy Japan, you know where humans so strong they can cut down 20 foot diameter trees with a single punch and aliens thrown in as well, but again - this never really explains the setting when there's a shot of something out of Futurama thrown into the mix. I don't know whether it's meant to be some distant future where there are aliens around or if it's kind of, sort of like the Marvel Universe where there's a mix between sci-fi and fantasy. I'm willing to believe either.
However while Goku is not very bright, in this one - I don't know whether it's because he's older and a little smarter but here I don't mind it and I would actually follow the show if it explained itself more. The character that's really annoying though is Gohan. He doesn't really do anything in the entire 20 minutes but cry that he's lost and walk further into trouble. I mean I get it, he's a lost kid but this makes Mary Jane from the Spider-Man movies look like Arnold Schwarzenegger complete with grenade launcher, it's really cringe worthy to sit through. The other characters actually I haven't seen much of. Aside from the "I must find Kakerok" villain, I don't think anyone else has 5 lines of dialogue.
I will also say that while it has a kids show atmosphere and the whole thing is played that way, especially in the dubs (the only reason why I watched the dub was because I couldn't find a Japanese version with English subtitles) I'll say that here it's fine.
Actually, in all honesty. It's not that bad. I mean yes while Gohan could have been written out entirely and it would have made a much better series pilot. I think that there is some form of potential here, I mean correct me if I'm wrong but every story involves Goku and friends having to fight super powerful aliens. I think that for a dumb watch I see the appeal completely. I mean while I don't exactly like the show enough to go and buy all the seasons (or the second version... seriously, I had to look at both for 10 minutes before writing the review and I still don't know if I've got the right one!) I would totally get why someone would claim to be a fan of the show. Me however, I'm probably going to try and get the Fullmetal Alchemist collection instead.
